Stranger Things star Sadie Sink hadn’t heard of Kate Bush before.

Stranger Things star Sadie Sink has told Vanity Fair she hadn’t even heard of Kate Bush before receiving the script for season 4.

The Kate Bush song ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)’ from her 1985 album Hounds of Love plays a significant role in Sink’s character Max’s escape from supervillain Vecna.

After featuring prominently in the Netflix sci-fi series, the song reached number 1 on the UK Official Charts on Friday (June17), 37 years after it was released.

The Netflix star said that she rectified her lack of musical knowledge immediately by listening to Kate Bush on repeat.

“I did not know Kate Bush beforehand, but then I immediately skimmed through her work and then became increasingly more obsessed, and then I was listening to her all the time,” said Sink.

“Knowing the emotional connection that she has to that song, and how it’s kind of her anthem, played into it,” she explained. “It’s something about the energy of the song, the synth and the lyrics and everything. It’s so perfect. They could not have picked a more perfect song.

To get into Max’s head, Sink recalled how she listened to the song for a whole day as her character had to.

“I did a whole day in my own time where I just was home and had it playing on in the background for the whole day, just to see if I would go insane, because that’s what Max was having to do.

“I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve listed it ‘Running Up That Hill.’ It’s been a lot, but I’m still not sick of it, which is good,” she shared.

Bush released a short statement on her website thanking the Duffer brothers for featuring the song.

“I have to admit I feel really moved by it all. Thank you so very much for making the song a No. 1 in such an unexpected way,” shared Bush.

Stranger Things season 4 part 2 premieres on July 1, streaming on Netflix.
